Chicken out!

White meat is in and it makes a perfect Sunday roast! But I started to wonder what kind of meat my family was eating when I saw a mass-production farm for the first time. The first set of pictures shows my husband's family farm where they raise organic chicken for their own consumption. Chickens there have room to roam and eat. The kids love to throw kale from the garden fence and watch the chickens running to eat their natural food!

As for this set of pictures, it clearly shows what goes on my mind when I see non-organic chicken sold in supermarkets, so sad... There is a campaign called Chicken out in Europe and you can read more about it here too.

That's a lot of chickens! That's a pretty chicken in the first post, enjoying her freedom.
And the young hens are having a bit of a gossip by the look of things :)
I feel sad for the cooped up chickens.

Vou ler as matérias dos links. O assunto me interessa já que há 9 anos não como carne vermelha. Minhas opções ficam nos ovos, frango e peixe.

Beijos e um ótimo final de semana!

So sad!!! Who knows what we are eating these days. Meat and vegetables are both tainted with chemicals.

We raise the same type chicken as in your picture. We keep them inside until it's warm enough for them to go out in the sun and enjoy the sun. Unfortunately, the breed is very body heavy and they don't do much running around. However, ours are kept clean and as happy as a chicken can be until they go to the butcher. And they get no chemicals to help them grow faster!!

we bought our first share of cage free eggs recently and felt a teeny-weeny less guilty after it. a great post, as always, Cris. Thanks for showing the comparison.....

We raised chickens when I was a kid ~ the free ranging type. My Mom had an issue years ago with the chicken farms. I'm going to pop over and check out Chicken Out.

Free chicken taste better, and their egg yolks are so colorful!
The only problem I have with them is: who's going to, how shall I say it, get them ready for dinner? This is something we, city dwellers, don't like to think about...

I try to buy farm raised chicken when it is available. If it isn't I always make sure I buy the kind not pumped full of growth hormones.

and the hormones that go with their feeds to make them grow faster and bigger...might just have the same effect on us, humans. hmmm...
